Why should I get dental implants?
Dental implants are used to replace teeth that have been lost, broken, or extracted. Essentially an implant is a metal post that is surgically placed where a tooth is missing. This metal post serves as the root of the tooth and helps secure a crown in place. Implants can replace one tooth or multiple teeth via an implant-supported bridge or an implant-retained denture. Through implants, patients can once again enjoy a mouth full of healthy teeth that look and feel completely natural. Dental implants are an effective and durable treatment option for full aesthetic and functional restoration.

The Implant Treatment Process
Consultation
Usually, the process of getting implants will encompass at least three appointments. The first will be a consultation, allowing the dentist to determine if you are an eligible candidate for implants.
The Implant Surgery
For the dental implant surgery, you will either be put under with anesthesia or else given a simple, localized numbing agent. The dentist will then make an incision to your gum, exposing the bone beneath. This is where your implant will go. A space will be prepared and the implant placed. Your dentist will then place the implant and make sure it is steady and secure. The gums are then stitched around the implant.
The Placement of the Tooth Prosthetic
It may take a couple weeks for the gums to fully heal and 4-6 months months for the implant to integrate with the bone. Once the healing has taken place, you will return to In Motion Dentists to have the prosthetic piece attached. This is done using an abutment, which is a connective piece placed at the top of the implant. Before you leave from this appointment, your dentist will make certain that the implant and prosthesis are secure, and that they look the way they are supposed to.
Follow-Up Appointments
You can anticipate returning to your dentist for a follow-up appointment or two, which will be vital for ensuring that your implants are working properly, that the implant has fully healed, and that you feel completely satisfied with the results of your dental implant surgery. Of course, you can also call the office any time you have pressing questions or concerns.

A dental implant is essentially a metal post that is surgically placed and functions as a root of tooth. On top of the metal post, your dentist will attach a dental prosthesis, which depending on your case may be a crown, bridge, or even a full denture.
- Crown: Crowns are essentially caps made to fit over the top of an existing tooth. Crowns may also be placed on top of implants. They are made to match the color and shape of your natural teeth, allowing for functional and aesthetic restoration. Crowns are usually the ideal option for replacing a small number of teeth.
- Fixed Dental Bridge: Fixed bridges are composed crowns that are seated on existing teeth or implants and pontics which replace the missing teeth. Bridges can be placed on top of dental implants, and are often the great option for replacing several missing teeth. Bridges, too, replicate the natural look and feel of your teeth.
- Implant Retained Denture: For patients experiencing more serious tooth loss, a partial or complete dental arch might be needed. Depending on the location of the tooth loss, patients can get a dental arch for their upper teeth or their lower teeth. When anchored by dental implants, dentures are sturdy, stable, permanent fixtures, ensuring maximum comfort and ease.
How can you be sure that you are a good candidate for dental implants? First, if you have lost teeth or are about to lose teeth, you should talk with your dentist about implants. You might consider getting dental implants if you are looking for a more comfortable and permanent alternative to your dentures. Ultimately, implants can be a great way to address tooth loss for anyone with good oral hygiene who wants natural-looking results. Here are a few other factors:
- Have sufficient bone density in the jaw, offering maximum support for the implant.
- Not have any untreated gum disease or other periodontal conditions.
- Be a non-smoker, or else be willing to drop their smoking habit.
- Practice good oral hygiene, and stay up to date with dental cleanings.
- Be willing to meet with their dentist to set realistic expectations for their procedure.
Dental implants have been around for decades, and they have been used to provide restorative care for countless patients. When performed by a trained and qualified dentist, they have an extremely high success rate. Complications are rare, and during your consultation, your dentist will explain them in greater detail, while also verifying that you are not in a high-risk group for these complications.
Dental implant surgery can have some discomfort, but is generally limited to just a few days. To make sure you are as comfortable as possible, we will use a localized numbing agent. For patients with a high level of anxiety or with more complicated surgical needs, we may recommend full anesthesia. Either way, you will not feel pain during the surgery itself, though a little soreness can be expected when your surgery is through.
Implant-retained dentures are considered a more permanent and functional alternative to traditional dentures. They are sturdier and will not offer nearly as much impediment to your speech, chewing, and eating. With that said, there are some patients who prefer traditional dentures, whether because they are less expensive or simply because they are more familiar. When you join us at Elevated Dentistry, we will be happy to outline all the treatment options available to you, walking you through the pros and cons of each.
It may take four to six months for the implants to fully heal. And, if you have any underlying conditions, the process could take longer. That may sound discouraging, but keep in mind that much of this healing is done “behind the scenes.” You will feel normal, though you will need to stay away from hard foods (like nuts), as well as hard-to-chew meats.
Following your surgery, you will likely experience some mild to moderate discomfort and minor swelling. The vast majority of patients are able to mitigate this pain using simple over-the-counter pain relievers. If you do need a prescription pain management option, your dentist can provide one. Make sure you talk with your dentist in advance about pain management options.
Patients often want to know how long it will be before they can resume their normal diet. For the first 24 hours, we recommend sticking to soft foods and liquids. We would also advise staying away from hot foods and drinks for one week. And, we would caution against drinking from a straw. After a 5-7 days, you can start eating more normally, though we would still advise steering clear of anything hard, crunchy, or sticky.
So long as you practice basic oral hygiene, including regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups, your actual implant should last you a lifetime. However, your crown, bridge, or denture may eventually need to be replaced. These prostheses can last anywhere from five years to 20, just depending on how well you take care of them.
Why Get a Dental Crown or Cap?
There are a number of reasons why you might need one of these restorative dentistry options. Crowns can be logical remedies for you if you have any of the following issues:
- Weak, cracked, or decaying teeth
- Teeth that have become severely worn down through everyday use
- Teeth that need large fillings and require some extra support
- Teeth that are oddly shaped or severely discolored
- Teeth that have been treated with a root canal
